The political system of Singapore
By Søren, Andreas and Asker
Singapore is a parliamentary republic with a representative democracy. The parliament is dominated by one party, PAP (People’s Action Party) who is a social conservative political party and Lee Hsien Long is the prime minister, while Tony Tan Keng Yam is the president. Like in Denmark, the parliament shares its power with the cabinet (the ministry). Thecabinet members are chosen by the president, who can be compared to the Queen of Denmark, she mostly has official, ceremonial and formal duties, but she does have the veto right, which the president of Singapore can use more often than the Queen of Denmark (Margrethe) is able to. The big difference Between the President and the queen is that the President of Singapore is elected by the people, but the Queen/King of Denmark will inherit the throne. Like in Britain and USA the Singaporean power of government is divided into 3 groups, the legislative, the judiciary and the executive. The legislative branch consists of the president Tony Tan Keng Yam and the parliament which are elected by the people. The executive branch consists of the cabinet and the Prime Minister. |
They are elected by the members of the Parliament, and currently the PAP controls the cabinet. The judiciary branch consists of the courts and the Supreme Court. Singapore has a Supreme Court like the USA that handle matters that are being accused of being against the constitution. Singapore has multiple political parties (12), but the PAP is the largest and most powerful. Singapore isn’t a country plagued by corruption, so the chosen parties represent the peoples interests. The current parties currently elected for the parliament is the Democratic Progressive Party, the National Solidarity Party, the People’s Action Party, the People’s Liberal Democratic Party, the Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Melayu Singapura, the Reform Party, the Singapore Democratic Alliance, the Singapore Democratic Party, the Singapore Justice Party, the Singapore People’s Party, the Singapore National Front and the Worker’s Party. These parties political ideologies represents the full spectre and can in interests be Compared to the Danish political parties. The Singaporean State has a reputation of being authoritarian and administrative. There’s multiple laws and regulations who controls how people can behave. |
