Education System of Singapore
By Caroline, Sofie and Signe
The first three years of the school system take place in the kindergarten, where children from the age of three to six, learn how to interact with other children, and prepare themselves to the next step – the primary school. At the kindergarten the children learn English and their mother tongue, which often is Tamil, Malay or Chinese. In the kindergarten they participate in activities, which include learning how to write and speak correctly. Next comes the primary school which is obligatory and requires attendance. It begins with a four-year foundation stage and is followed by a two-year orientation stage. The student normally start the foundation stage at age seven, and end it when the student is twelve. The lessons are in English, but in the primary school the students are taught in their native language. In Orientation School the basis lessons such as English, mother tongue and mathematics are taught at an appropriate level that corresponds to the individual student’s abilities. At the end of Primary School, Primary 6, is the Primary School Leaving Examination, which determines whether the student is ready to leave Primary school and go to Secondary school or not. Based on the student’s results in the examination at Primary School, the students are placed in different tracks. In the 3-4 year long process at the Secondary school, the students will be prepared for the continuing course. 9 out of 10 students graduate from school, and get the upper secondary school leaving examination. |
